Colorado was a staging area for the drive by General Stephen W. Kearny south to Santa Fe. Kearny gathered his forces south of the Arkansas River near Bent's Fort (which was north of the river, near present-day La Junta). Bent's Fort itself, which had been established by the Bent brothers many years before as a trading post along the Santa Fe Trail, was now taken over by the government for use as a military hospital and storehouse. With his Army of the West, Kearny marched to Santa Fe with little resistance.

Church services were begun in Denver in 1859. Eighteen-year-old Page 15 William Larimer, son of the founder of Denver, reported that the first service was held in one end of a cabin while at the other end gambling was going on, and the jingle of money formed the background to Mr. Fisher's preaching. Theater came to Denver in October 1859 when Colonel Thorne's Star Company from Leavenworth, Kansas, played Cross of Gold at Apollo Hall. The Rocky Mountain News was founded by W. N. Byers in April 1859 after he secured the shipment of a press across the plains.
